Lake TjulträsketLake Tjulträsk lies to the west of Ammarnäs, at the end of the road. It is a large, deep lake at the foot of Stour Ajgarts’ mighty silhouette. People lived here by the lake outlet in the Stone Age. The remains of dwellings and at least twenty pitfall traps have been excavated. The western end of the lake, Lill-Tjulträsket, is an delta landscape of natural alluvial meadows. Several families settled here at the end of the 1800s, and today some of the buildings remain in their original form. Lake Tjulträsk is therefore designated as a nationally important cultural heritage site. Matsokudden is the most impressive of these old settlements. The open hay meadows and the greying cottage and barns are beautifully situated. Habitat type: freshwater lake, meadow birch forest, mossy birch heath, willow scrub
