Trails

Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve offers a range of adventures and experiences! Nowadays it is most common for visitors to embark on short day-trips, or trips of 2-3  days. We are pleased to present a new system of hiking trails and bridges around Ammarnäs during summer 2005. The trail will be named the Lasseleden Trail after Lasse Strömgren from Ammarnäs, who took the iniative to establish the new trails. You can read other visitors’ accounts and suggestions in Vindelfjällen excursions.

The Kungsleden Trail

The Kungsleden Trail is a must for many visitors. The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) has been active in the area since the early 1900s, and run many mountain cabins. They will look after you if you visit their cabins. These cabins and their whereabouts are presented in Cabins in the reserve.

Drottningleden

Starts in Hemavan at naturum Vindelfjällen. At first it follows the Kunsleden trail. At “Vacker utsikt” the Drottningleden trail diverges from the Kunglsleden trail and goes down the Murtserejohkke canyon. Along this step part or the trail flowers like the alpine gentian flowers on the limestone rich slope. Beautiful formations have been made by the water. On the other side of the river you walk up streams and will probably bee able to se rough legged buzzard. When you reach the alpine region it might bee time for a shorter stop and something to eat or drink while looking at the view over Hemavan and the norweigan mountains in the east. The rest of the trail is quite easy walking towards Laisaliden.

 Syterstugan-Umasjö

Startsat Syterstugan. The trail is quiet easy to walk and you get a great view over the Måskonåive glacier and norra Storfjället.

 Umasjö-Tärnasjön

Starts at the parking lot at Rågkoejohkke. The trail goes along the stream and then upp on the mountain heath where Trailing azalea and Diapensia lapponica flowers in early July. A nice place for a brake is the small hills by the small lakes. The trail then goes down hills and reaches the Jirajuhkka river. During June and July the streams running down to Jirajuhkka can become quite big from melting water so a couple of wades might be necessary. Along the stream you often see the Dipper diving for insects in the clear water.

The ravine over the stream is quite spectacular. After that the trail goes up hills and then along open alpine mires. After one last wade you reach the U shaped Jirevalley where you find a cabin with 4 beds and firewood. With the governmental fishing card 60:-/day you can fish for trout and arctic char in the Jirajavrie lake. The cost for staying in the cabin is 100 sek/day, to bee payed to the Swedish governmental board with the counterfoil found in the cabins.

On the other side of the valley lies another cabin built up during mining for Glimmer in the early 1800´s. This is also a cabin owned by the governmental board that you can stay in for 100 sek/day and pay with the counterfoil found in the cabin. The last piece of the journey goes across hethlands before reaching the big lake Tärnasjö. You can book a boat in advance that will take you to the other side of the lake to the Tärnasjö cabin from where it is possible to walk further on the Kungsleden trail.

 Norra Fjällnäs-Forsavan

This trail starts at Hermanssons barn in Norra fjällnäs. It is about 14 km long and was before used by King Gustav the 6th Adolf for transport to his cabin in Forsavan, first with horses and later on with tractor. Gustav 6th Adolf was also interested in archaeology and found quite many traces from the Stone age. Karl 16th Gustav today uses helicopter to reach the cabin. The trail goes over heaths with juniperus and a great view over Norra Storfjället. For an even better view take a walk up on Båjuonåives peak where you get view all the way to Ammarfjället.

The Forsavan cabin lies beautifully near the streams of Tärnaån with the Syterpeaks in the background. The cabin has 4 beds and firewood. Cost 100 sek to bee paid to the governmental administrative board with the counterfoil found in the cabins.

Walk along the river and its´ giant holes made by water flowing through the limestone rich bedrock. In some of them you can even take a bath during hot days, when the temperature reaches 20-25 degrees Celsius in the water.
